Nature Index Journals: What They Are and Whether They Matter for Saudi Researchers

Some Saudi researchers hear the phrase “Nature Index journals” from a department head or a ranking report. Many are not sure what it means. They wonder whether it replaces Scopus quartiles for promotion. The short answer is no. It is a different tool with a different purpose. Understanding the difference helps you plan your publications.

This guide explains what the index is and how to treat it.

What the Nature Index Is

The Nature Index tracks research output in a selected group of journals. An independent panel of active researchers chooses those journals. The index then counts papers by the institutions and countries of the authors. It is published by Springer Nature. The aim is to give a view of high-quality research output across institutions.

How the Counting Works

The index uses several measures. A simple article count counts each paper once for each institution involved. A fractional count shares credit between authors. A weighted version adjusts for the field, so that fields with many papers do not dominate. You do not need to calculate these. You do need to know that credit follows the author affiliation on the published paper.

Which Journals Are Included

The list is curated, and it is reviewed each year. It includes flagship journals and a set of respected journals from several publishers and societies. Being in the index does not depend on the publisher name. Always check the current list on the official Nature Index website. Do not rely on a copied list from an old post.

It Is Not the Same as a Scopus Quartile

A Scopus quartile ranks a journal inside a subject category by citation data. The Nature Index is a list of selected journals used to count institutional output. A journal can be in one and not the other. A journal can be Q1 in Scopus and absent from the index. Treat them as two separate checks.

Why Universities Pay Attention to It

Rankings and reports often use the index to compare institutions. Leaders at some universities encourage researchers to publish in listed journals for this reason. This can create pressure that is not written in a promotion policy. Ask your college whether it encourages it, and whether it affects any formal requirement.

Does It Count for Promotion?

Most promotion policies name Scopus or Web of Science and a quartile. Few name the Nature Index. Some colleges may reward papers in listed journals through bonuses or recognition. Do not assume. Ask your research office for the written policy, and ask whether any internal reward uses the index.

Overlap With Scopus

Many journals in the index are also indexed in Scopus. That means one paper can satisfy both. Do not assume overlap, though. Check the journal on the Scopus source list and on the Nature Index list. Record the quartile and the date you checked.

How to Check a Journal

Open the official Nature Index journal list. Search the exact journal title. Note the subject area shown. Then search the same title on the Scopus source list. Compare the results. This takes a few minutes and avoids false claims in a promotion file.

Subject Coverage

The index is strongest in natural sciences and health sciences. Coverage in other fields is more limited. If you work in the humanities or in many applied fields, the list may have few titles for you. Check your field before you spend time on this goal.

How Selective These Journals Are

Many listed journals receive far more submissions than they publish. Editors often decide quickly whether a paper has wide significance. A solid but narrow study is often a better fit for a specialist journal. Be honest about your contribution before you submit.

Assessing Whether Your Paper Fits

Ask whether the result changes how the field thinks about a question. Ask whether it is new, strong, and broadly interesting. Compare it with recent papers in the target journal. If your paper is a careful step forward in a narrow area, aim for a strong specialist journal instead.

Using Affiliation Correctly

Credit follows the affiliation printed on the paper. Use your institution’s official English name. Use it the same way in every paper. Avoid short forms and spelling variants. Check the affiliation line in the proofs. A small mistake can send credit to the wrong record or lose it.

Backup Strategy

Choose a primary target and two backups. Include at least one journal that is Scopus indexed at your required quartile, even if it is not in the Nature Index. This protects your promotion file. A paper that is rejected from a selective journal can still find a good home.

Collaboration and Author Order

International collaboration is common in these journals. Agree on author order and affiliations early. Confirm the corresponding author. Decide how each institution will be listed. Clear agreements prevent delays at submission.

Common Mistakes

Treating the index as a Scopus replacement. Using an old journal list. Ignoring the university policy. Submitting a narrow paper to a very selective journal. Misspelling the institution name.

Planning Your Timeline

Selective journals can take several months to decide. Add time for revision. Add a buffer of one or two months. If your promotion deadline is close, start with a journal that meets your policy and has a realistic timeline.

Questions to Ask Your Research Office

When inquiring with your college, find out if the Nature Index is included in any formal rules and whether publications in listed journals qualify for rewards or recognition. Additionally, clarify which version of the list the institution follows and who verifies these claims during the promotion review. Written answers protect you if the rule changes.

What Happens If a Journal Leaves the List

The list is reviewed each year, so journals can be added or removed. A paper published while a journal was listed does not become invalid later. Still, keep a record of the date you checked. Save a screenshot or note of the list entry. This helps if a reviewer asks you to show proof.

Sharing Your Result After Publication

Once the paper is out, share it through your institutional profile. Use the same institution name on every profile. Link the paper to your author identifiers. This helps databases match the paper to you and to your university. Good records support both citations and counts.

A Short Decision Checklist

Is the paper broad and strong enough for a selective journal? Does the journal appear on the current official list? Is it also indexed in Scopus at your required quartile? Is the affiliation line correct? Do you have a verified backup? If any answer is no, fix it before you submit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Nature Index journal the same as a Q1 journal?

No. They are separate checks. A journal can be in one and not the other.

Where can I find the current journal list?

Use the official Nature Index website and check the current year’s list.

Should I always aim for these journals?

No. Match the journal to your paper’s real contribution and your policy.
